Zend Optimizer and Zend Encoder
I was just looking through the Useful Files download and the About this file section of the eaccelerator.ini says:
"If you don't use scripts encoded with Zend Encoder then we do not recommend you install Zend Optimizer with eAccelerator."
This is the first time I've seen a statement like this in regards to the Zend Optimizer. Do they say this because of optimizing that eAccelerator does on it's own?
Josh
Hi Josh,
At this point, my take is that Zend Optimizer (without encoding), EA, APC and Xcache (might soon be a new player in the php caching world) all try to accelerate php with caching techniques. Using 2 caching tools at the same time is most likely counter productive.
If you use the Zend encoder, you now have no choice since you need the tool that can now "de-code" these encoded php pages.

Hi Chris,
Just to make sure we're on the same page here, we're talking about the free Zend Optimizer download, correct? I didn't realize that the optimizer was a caching tool. Honestly, I didn't know what it did. It makes sense that it caches the scripts.

Hi Josh,
My bad. I don't think Zend Optimizer does caching. I think it does some sort of "code" optimization. EA does also some code optimization (eaccelerator.optimizer="1") so my guess is that it might be redundant.
I'm mostly guessing here. If someone has a more definite answer please confirm.
I've tried to use Zend Optimizer multiple times in the last few years, each time I saw no gain. So I've never used it.
Let me know if you see some speed improvement using Zend Optimizer.
Thanks,
Chris
My understanding is that EA does caching. In the cryptic install instructions, at least for 0.9.4 for PHP 4.3.11, they have you set up a temp caching folder. ??? I was also my understanding, limited as it may be,:) that these two work together. Once mostly optimizes (Zend) and the (EA) caches. Just my 2 cents ;) Since I am using IIS I have also enabled HTTP compression but that seems to only help with HTML stuff so far at least.
